Field Day Summary

Field Day 2018 turned out to be a fantastic weekend.   All of the  preparation and hard work that went into it was overshadowed by the great and bountiful number of people who came  out to support and work the event. For me personally, the fact that so many people were there to help take down the site and load the truck, was most appreciated. We were packed and off the field by 4:10 PM.   More info to follow over the next few day  but special thanks to planners  Rob, KC2ILP, our new Field Day Chairman and Bill, KC2SYL,   as well as  the core committee, Ken, WB2KWC; Lew, N2RQ; Jerry, WB2ZEX; Don, WB2BEZ; Jeff, N2ION; Craig, KD2CXK;  and Tom, KD2ESW.

Thanks to all!

Richie, K2KNB

Field Day Is Here

Good morning,
Field Day is upon us!, June 23rd and 24th at the Rosemary Kennedy Center in Wantagh.
We expect to be loading the truck in Massapequa Park around 3:30 PM. Our equipment is located in  Massapequa Park. Please call me or email me for location.
Unless someone has a vehicle capable of handling some tents and other equipment, the truck will have to stop at my house in Old Bethpage, to pick things up. It is not necessary for any one other than the truck driver to come here.
The FD site is located on the property of the Rosemary Kennedy Center in Wantagh. The field entrance is located on Oakfield Ave at the intersection of Midland Place. We cannot go onto the field until 6 PM. Please do not enter the grounds before then.
Our goal for the Friday evening is as follows:
  • Set-up main tent
  • assemble 3 beam antennas
  • establish location for vans that will be staying for the weekend
  • set-up generators and one or two vertical antennas for stations to practice overnight Friday
Saturday Morning
  • Will need someone to pick up bagels donated by Town Bagel in Bellmore. Simple breakfast.
  • Complete set-up Does anyone have 10×10 pop-ups that they can lend us?
  • Tower and ladders to be assembled in order when all three are ready
  • Lunch around 12
  • On the air at 2 PM
  • On air ends 2 PM Sunday.
  • We need as much help as possible taking things down on Sunday. Equipment will now be stored locally in Wantagh so even helping out, you should be done pretty early on Sunday.
Not everyone is able to participate in the set-up and loading of the truck, so this note is more informational, but we look forward to seeing you at field day.
Thank you!

June 2018

President’s Message June 2018

June is Field Day month and I want to remind all of you that it is the one event that needs full support from the Club. From set-up to take down, the more hands available the faster and easier the event goes.

Field Day is an event designed to give us a taste of what communications would be like during a major emergency. Remember that amateur radio was established on a national basis for exactly that reason. Field Day is that opportunity to show that we can fulfill that role.

The conditions, under which LIMARC would have to set up an emergency communications center in a field in Wantagh, are clearly outside of the realm of likely.  However, the spirit of cooperation in setting up our site, and the skills learned, have real practical value. The more opportunity to practice the more ingrained the skills become. From safety to operating skills, there is much practical knowledge to be learned and re-enforced.

We will be at the site on Friday night to begin some of the set-up. Several members will be staying overnight and some stations will be up and running. Set-up continues Saturday morning at 7 AM. We will be on the air from 2 PM Saturday until 2 PM Sunday, when take down will take place.

Please try to make time to help out in any way, and of Couse, including operating the stations throughout the 24 hour period. Check out the website for more information.

See you there!

May 2018

President’s Message May 2018

In most volunteer organizations thee is usually a small percentage of the members that take care of most of the issues facing the organization. It is just the way that it is.  There are times however, when a larger number of members is necessary to insure the overall success of the organization.

We are trying to make sure that our general meetings have an interesting pre0session and a good topic for the main agenda. We do this in part to make sure that you have a fun evening out, and also to help in sure that a quorum is resent at every meeting. We cannot take a legal vote without a quorum.

We are working to improve out media image. Through the website, a Reflector, and other media to come such as Facebook and Twitter,  we want to present a dynamic representation of who we are and what we do. Your membership in the Reflector, and your support with articles and information  will help us to reach a broader base.

We will have another HF station day after the May 12th VE Session at Levittown Hall. It is a great opportunity to have hands von experience with HF radio as well as digital modes. If we build it, will you come? We hope so.

Finally, Field Day is almost upon us. We generally set up 5 stations requiring tents, towers, wires, generators, networking, assembly and disassembly. It is a really important event because it goes to the heart of why the government allows amateur radio to exist; preparing for emergency communications to assist in a national disaster. This is a large group effort and one of the times that we really need you to step forward.  We all need to build it together and they will come!
